While England sweltered in Mediterranean heat earlier this week, over in our part of the Med it was not sweltering. Naturally on the day I flew back (Thursday) Greece was sweltering and it started to rain in England. That was just God's little joke on me.
Earlier in the week the flags were flying stiffly outside my hotel in Kalamata. We will not discuss the middle flag of the Evil Empire but it stood stiff to attention like the two other Greek flags beside it.
What the weather is in Kalamata down by the sea means nothing when you reach Kambos 350 metres higher in the Taygettos mountains above. As a rule if it is cold and wet in Kalamata it is cold and wet in Kambos but if it is warm and sunny in Kalamata ( especially in winter) it could be anything up in Kambos.
Thus in Kalamata the win blew but it was dry and well over 20 degrees. But in the hills above the Greek Hovel in Kambos the clouds gathered. That meant no poisoning since rain can wash away all of your good work and no frigana chopping since carrying a n 5 foot metal pole around on the top of a hill as lightening threatens is not so smart. So rain stopped play but at least it gave scope for me to take a menacing photo or two..
