I cannot imagine what institutions were thinking as they piled into Oxford Nanopore (ONT) at 425p in its September 2021 IPO. Maybe it was the Neil Woodford hype? The deadwood press has certainly sucked up press releases and gave it the full promote. But a valuation of £3.7 billion for a business which was a massive cash guzzler and would be for years to come was insane, as I suggested at the time.

I have always thought that Oxford Nanopore (ONT) was massively overhyped and that its CEO Gordon Sanghera was a bit of a bullshitter, fawned upon on by the deadwood press. The company IPO’d just under two years ago at 425p – its shares now languish at 231p. Today we have half calendar year numbers from a company still capitalised at almost £2 billion and the smell of Sanghera bullshit is strong.

The phone call that was today’s person from Porlock was my mother-in-law who had just come home from an appointment to find smashed windows in her house just across the river from here. My 93 year old father-in-law, deaf as a post, had slept while burglars stole everything of value throughout the house. What a world we live in. Oxford Nanopore is the flagship unquoted in the Neil Woodford portfolio both at EIF and WPCT. Yesterdaty it snuck out red flag strewn results and on a number of counts this looks utterly grim for Nomates.

I do hope that the FCA and the "Independent" directors at Woodford Patient Capital Trust (WPCT) look into this matter with some urgency as we appear to have evidence today, thanks to Oxford Nanopore, that Neil Woodford funds have been stating their NAV in an unnacceptably aggressive manner. And that is the most generous spin on what has gone on.

The real fear Neil Woodford has is redemptions. The sleazey scoops for blow job articles deals in today's Sunday Times cannot hide that. I look at the absurd valuation of Oxford Nanopore, an unlisted biotech Unicorn, puffed in today's paper but also at the cracks now showing despite the glowing piffle in the same paper's write up on Nomates himself
