All summer long, myself and the kids have been using out new 100 metre hose and watering cans to keep our vegetables, trees and fruit bushes from dying. It has been a daily ritual and we have done well. On Friday, like the rest of you, I got a phone alert from the convicted fraudster Louise Haigh who is our deputy PM, warning me not to light a fire or barbecue because of the drought. It is all so 1976.

As we are half way up a mountain the temperature here at the Greek Hovel is a bit cooler than down by the sea. But it is still in the mid thirties and I venture outside less than the younger folk here, preferring the cool of a large living area, kept chilled the old way by thick stone walls and the new way by air conditioning. I gather that back in the UK the alarmists at the BBC and the Met Office have noted that it is quite hot and are insisting that this is demonstrable proof of global warming.

One day we woke up and there was an old style gypsy caravan, the ones with a rounded wooden roof, parked in our field at Butterwell Farm in Byfield. Next to it a horse stood gazing. My mother, a free spirit of the 1970s, had offered out our field to a couple called Rob and Maggie who spent their lives as new style gypsies.
