Today I have my older three children with me for a second Christmas Day. So I shall shortly abandon my desk and start preparing a duck with red cabbage, sprouts and bacon, potatoes, parsnips and honey glazed carrots. That will be followed by home made Christmas pudding and home made brandy butter. Below you can see how the first pudding was presented on Christmas Day itself.

First, over mince pies (bought in) and home made brandy butter or cream plus mulled wine, potent and made with my special recipe, the 24 of us practised with “Away in a manger”. Then we headed off up the lane to see an elderly and, this year, bereaved, neighbour.

Brandy, vanilla, caster sugar, butter. If you cock up making brandy butter, then you merit a lifetime ban from the kitchen. One more Christmas Eve task completed. The butter now sits in the fridge ready for the big day when, naturally, I am the cook in charge of everything.

Yesterday was Christmas day number one as my daughter came down to Bristol for a Christmas meal. I am rather worried that having scored a perfect ten on this one it will be hard to up my game for Christmas Day itself.
