Back in the days when, as a supportive straight, I marched against Clause 28, in the days of Aids stigma the LGBT community had a tough time. Discrimination was widespread. But thankfully times have changed. Outside certain other minority communities who might not understand Queers for Palestine, the UK is a pretty tolerant place.
As if they have not suffered enough, gays can get married and economically they flourish. Folks do not bat an eyelid seeing two blokes or birds holding hands in the street or in numerous TV adverts. For 3% of the population the LGBT community is wildly overrepresented in TV dramas, adverts and on our screens generally. Sub 3% of the population has appropriated c 30% of the days in the year as their own, or had done four years ago, I bet the number is even higher now
Is there really any need to ram the inclusivity message down the throats of the rest of us. The bus below is here in rural Yorkshire. The Village Pub has an “ask for Clive” sign in its window to stress how welcoming it is to the LGBT community. Does this really need to be said now that its 2025. Isn’t it all just a bit boring now?
