My grandfather, the Bennite Sir John Winnifrith, ended up as Director General of the National Trust after ending his career of unmasking spies and other jobs in the Civil Service. For more than twelve years on this website I have documented the sort of woke tomfoolery or bad history which will have had Grandpa spin in his grave.
As a staunch socialist Grandpa believed that the Trust should spend its cash on preserving history buildings and sites and enabling poorer folk to enjoy them via cheap access. These days it costs an arm and a leg to enter a NT property and the organization wastes vast sums campaigning on identity politics issues. That means it has less to spend on its day job while alienating the sort of folks who have been its bedrock supporters. They cancel their memberships and leave fewer legacies. The doom loop continues.
It is Nigel Farage, a man who shares the Euroscepticism of Grandpa, who flags up the latest nonsense, the installation of tampon machines with vegan tampons in men’s lavatories for, one assumes, transgender punters or really just for show.
It is essentially harmless in effect but pointless. However, it comes at a cost and will alienate more than it attracts. And so it goes on.
