I am advised that I should not be allowed to attend the first hearing, tomorrow, in the case against ex Warwick School teacher Paul Stainsby tomorrow as he stands accused of 12 accusations of sexual abuse against boys. Apparently I might learn something I did not know that might contaminate my evidence lest Stainsby pleads not guilty and it goes to a full trial. But my coverage of the case and my 14 year campaign to get Warwick to accept what happened on its watch has seen more OW’s contact me. It seems old memories, buried for years, are being triggered in men now in their 40s, 50s or even older.
I spent an hour on the phone last night with one man who recalls how he was invited to the home in Warwick of a teacher, I shall not name, for a party. He was 14 and arrived to find several other boys of his age lots of booze and men in their thirties. He rumbled what was going on and fled. I just cannot believe that this sort of thing wholly escaped the attention of other teachers or the authorities at Warwick.
The same man also recounts being “auditioned” by Alan Wilkins when aged nine. We agreed that Wilkins, who was also my form master, was a sadist, discussing how he would hit boys in class. But, as I detailed here, he was also a paedophile who would invite boys to his private rooms to “audition for plays” . These boys knew he was a violent man and must have been terrified as he shot an imaginary arrow into them and asked that they fall into his warm embrace for comfort.
Surely other teachers at Warwick knew that this was going on. Why did nothing happen to stop both the physical and sexual abuse? The cover-up is almost as bad as the abuse.
You may remember that in its last letter to all OWs Warwick denied that it had a problem with sexual abuse although many of us already knew that was a lie. I am told that after Stainsby’s plea is entered it will again be writing to all OWs to accept that it may have had a problem and citing the allegations against Stainsby. But, as I put this latest victim in touch with the Police, I have told the headmaster that it is not enough to say there are allegations against one named teacher.
Warwick must accept that there are now allegations against multiple other teachers not all of whom I have yet named. And in doing so it can invite those who were abused to come forward, without fear, through proper channels, not through me, but to the Warwick safeguarding team or Warwickshire Police.
I want my part on this battle to come to an end after 14 years of campaigning about historic physial abuse, including that which I suffered at the hands of Geoffrey Eve and, in a way, Alan Wilkins, but also secual abuse and the cover up of both. But it can only do so when Warwick School opens up completely to former pupils and when Warwickshire Police re-open the case against Charles Watmough who now stands accused by a number of boys and who, based on information from a former teacher, I now believe, acted in concert with another former teacher who I have yet to name.
