There are two types of teachers I have exposed from Warwick School. I started 14 years ago with sadistic bastards like Geoffrey Eve who inflicted physical abuse on we boys, including me. Then I moved onto the paedophile teachers of whom six have so far been identified. Today I name a 7th who has already been convicted.
Before that there is Alan Wilkins who was guilty of both sexual abuse as detailed HERE but also extreme physical abuse. A victim has come forward with his story of the latter:
Wilkins organised a school play when I was 11, and at the first meeting about the play (Emil and the Detectives) I was given the role of Newsboy. Wilkins subsequently changed several of the roles, and I was changed to play Cookie.
The message never got through to me, and I learned the wrong part. At the first rehearsal, clearly I got it wrong, and Wilkins pulled me out of the room, just outside the Junior School staff room. He punched me in the side of the head, so hard that I fell to the floor, and hit me several times more when I was on the floor.
He hit me every time he saw me for days after, until I eventually left the play.
Ends.
So a hulking great beast like Wilkins can beat up a little boy outside a room where staff members must have been present as play rehearsals took place outside of lesson time. And nobody did anything about it or about Wilkins.
Warwick has conveniently lost its records from this period so we will never know if anything was done to control this monster.
I would love to hear from any of the female teachers at Warwick Junior about why they did not speak out. I suspect that they were terrified and rightly so. I did suggest to the School 14 years ago that it reach out to Mrs. Fawcett, Mrs. Birt or Mrs. Hobday who were all kindly ladies, about Eve but I’d bet the ranch that it did not, preferring to bury its head in the sand.
Now to the next paedophile. He is a bit of an outlier in that Graham Jaggers, a PE teacher, was not into young boys but a girl. In 2005 he was convicted of having sexual relations back in the 1980s with a girl then aged 12 and 13. He would have been in his mid thirties at that point. In, Pythonesque fashion, Jagger’s lawyer insisted that, other than this episode, he was a “man of exemplary character”.
The Judge thought otherwise and gave him four years partly because while Jaggers had admitted to a friend, who then testified, that he was guilty, he pleaded not guilty so forcing the poor woman to have to give evidence in Court.
A reader asks what percentage of Warwick School staff were abusers notimng that the place seems to have been a nest of snakes? The answer is that I do not know. I have questions and complaints about three other members of staff so far not named but in one case I must wait until after the Stainsby trial in the others I need more folks to come forward. But it is clear from what is now, largely thanks to me, in the public domain that Warwick did have a cultural or institutional problem which it covered up for years and which in still insisting that it has one or two bad apples/lone wolves it is in denial about.
Until it openly admits to its problems, ‘fessing that there were many sexual and physical abusers on staff, not just to its narrow opted in mailing list of OW’s whose happy memories of smelling each other’s 1st XV jockstraps, but to all OWs, via press adverts and the other regional media, we will simply never know the scale of what went on.
