For the first time ever I am harvesting olives after Christmas rather than before and I can hear chainsaws, twerkers and threshing machines everywhere. The hills are alive with the sounds of my neighbours harvesting in a far more industrial way than myself and reader T. We work at a rather slower pace.
It was not great weather on day one with intermittent rain. None the less Tim twerked the half a dozen trees nearest to the house. They normally yield well as I am not alone in fertilizing them in the way that only a gentlemen can, various guests provide them with water and nitrogen if you know what I mean.
Meanwhile I took my saw to the trees around the pool which are also high yielders and took branches back to be stripped of olives. By the end of day one, a day interrupted by various events included lunch with mad lefties L&G, we had four sacks. That is four Englishmen’s sacks so containing 25-35 kg.
we will decant them later to remove more leaves and try to create an Albanian sack, or near as damn it, that is to say 50kg. We do maths every day and we reckon that day 1 will be c 110 kg of olives which is 12-15 litres of oil. We are aiming to take 20 litres back to the UK, everything else will be sold with the funds channeled into my offshore bank account here in Greece.
A lump of pork each, some potatoes for T and a glass of wine each at the restaurant owned by Thomas was a suitable reward at the end of the day. It was deserted since Thomas does not allow smoking. More updates on the harvest and on the restaurant situation in Kambos where it is all change yet again later.
Meanwhile having been without water and thus heating, since the system is driven by water pumps, on our arrival, the cavalry arrived, that is to say the pool man who was here to reinstall our tanks so we have no water outages in the summer. It seems that the municipality had cut me off when installing a new meter. The pool man fixed that and as of Wednesday night we not only had water but also heating. With the temperature at night dropping close to zero, that is most welcome.
