I wrote to the MP for Warwick & Leamington, Matt Western, on 29th September about historic sexual abuse at my old school, Warwick School. A teacher who is already a convicted paedophile stands accused by seven boys of abusing them while serving at Warwick. The Police took the first statements in 2021. But the Crown Prosecution Service is just sitting on them. One of the seven has killed himself.
My request to the local MP was simply that he urges the CPS to act. Either prosecute this man or state that for whatever reason they will not. At which point I would name him. While the CPS sits on its hands I cannot lest I prejudice any proceedings . I would love to name him as I named Charles Watmough another Warwick School teacher paedophile where the Police took statements but the CPS did nothing. Or Alan Wilkins another pervert Warwick allowed to leave with glowing references, as they always did, so he could continue his activities elsewhere and David Stuke, a boarding house master with wandering hands.
I would bet the ranch that the man I cannot name abused more than seven boys. Resident at the heart of the school for more than a decade I bet there are more victims and when he is named the floodgates on his crimes and on those of other teachers who abused Warwick boys and were protected by the school, will open.
Western did not reply to me for three weeks. So last week I tried again and was told we will get back to you next week. I contacted his office today and with that prompting I was told by his assistant Jenny that he will do nothing.
“I’ve spoken with Matt, and he has advised that, in line with parliamentary protocol, the appropriate course of action is for you to contact your local MP. They will be able to take up the matter on your behalf.
Although Matt is unable to intervene directly as you are not a constituent, he would appreciate being kept informed. If your local MP approaches Warwick School or the CPS regarding this issue, please do ensure Matt is copied into that correspondence so he can stay updated.
Additionally, if you become aware of another pupil affected by the same concerns who does live within Matt’s constituency, he would be able to take up the case on their behalf and work collaboratively with your MP to help ensure justice is served.
We
understand this may be frustrating, and we’re sorry we can’t advocate for you
directly. That said, we hope this guidance helps you move forward, and we
remain committed to supporting efforts to address the issue wherever possible”
Ends.
This is a cop out. The sexual abuse at Warwick School does not affect me directly it is not on my behalf that I raise the issue. But surely that it may have been a massive problem at the best known school in Mr. Western’s constituency is an issue he should be addressing? I see that he is campaigning about a proposed solar farm in Radford Semele and about some development in East Whitnash. Why can’t he ask the CPS about Mr X not on behalf of me but on behalf of the countless victims at a school in the heart of his constituency? There is no Parliamentary ruling stopping an MP trying to help victims of sexual abuse, even if they were alerted to the issue by someone outside the area they represent.
It is almost as if the Labour party does not care about historic sexual abuse.
