Already inside since 2022 for his noncing before he darkened the doors of Warwick School, Paul Stainsby was finally charged by the CPS, after it sat on files for eons, with numerous counts of abusing boys at my alma mater last December. Since then Stainsby has tried to dodge justice by saying that he had cognitive issues. Rejoice rejoice!
A case management hearing on Friday finally put an end to that charade and Stainsby will stand trial on November 3rd at Warwick Crown Court. How long that will take will depend on whether he spares the 5 victims who are testifying an ordeal by pleading guilty or not.
You will remember that another victim who had given a statement to the Police killed himself the week Stainsby was sentenced for his crimes elsewhere. I speak regularly to the wife of another victim who gave a statement but cannot face the ordeal. I can understand that in full but hope, even at this late stage, he changes his mind so other charges can be added.
When the trial is over Warwick School needs to come clean and reach out with mailings and press adverts, for a large number of OWs still live in the Warwick area or the wider West Midlands. It needs to give the news on Stainsby but to admit that there was a wider problem with other teachers.
Those who have been accused by victims include men who I have named on this website including Charles Watmough ( still alive) and the dead paedophiles David Stook, Alan Wilkins and David Nicholls. There is also another music teacher, recruited by Nicholls and who worked with Watmough, who is alive but who cannot be named as he is under a live investigation by the Warwickshire Old Bill. There may be others, I have my suspicions.
Warwick must state explicitly that there was a wider problem with sexual (and also physical abuse) than just Stainsby and the sadist who attacked me Geoff Eve. And it must invite any other victims to come forward, in confidence, assuring them that they will not be alone.
Only then will the scale of the problem and the extent of the cover-up emerge. Perhaps when the Police are not presented with five allegations against Watmough as, thanks to my work, they have been but with more they will finally prosecute.
Warwick should be getting ready to act as soon as the Stainsby trial is over. Nothing other than full transparency and an admission of the scale of the problem will suffice.
