Tom Winnifrith Postcard: Another big loser on Independence day - the idea we care what celebs think

The celebrities lined up in their droves for Remain yet today we celebrate Independence Day in Britain. Does anyone care what David Beckham, Posh Spice, Keira ffing Knightley or Daniel Craig think about the EU? I suspect not. Indeed some celebrity interventions were clearly unhelpful but celebs like Sir Bob Geldof are so utterly convinced of their own self importance they just don't get it. I discuss this all in a bonus podcast. Of course one celeb, pictured below, swayed tens of thousands of votes.

Third Lawyer's Letter received from Web Sheriff, the bully boy solicitors to celebrities xxxxx and xxxxxx

This time I just told the Web Sheriff law firm where to stick it. The article it objects to mentioned none of the matters currently covered by the injunction it merely mentioned celebrities xxxxxx and xxxxxx in a wholly different context. Is there really now a blanket ban on reporting all aspects of their lives? No there is not.

It is not the job of the Web Sheriff law firm to enforce the innjunction and I have repeatedly asked it when the UK Government gave it authority to do so? Of course it has not. The Web Sheriff firm declines to answer that question and nor will it say for whom it acts although it is bloddy obvious.

Newsnight on EU – heaven help us: a win for UKIP ( shame no-one watches the show)

I am back with my family in Warwickshire. Being deluded lefties they appear to only get two channels, Pravda One and Pravda 2 and so on the latter I have just found myself watching Newsnight debate the great European question. It was a slam dunk win for the team of Nigel Farage, Terry Smith and a sensible woman from the No campaign in Norway. The only good thing that can be said for the yes side is that their blonde bird talked utter rubbish but was quite fit. That really is it.

The arguments for staying in were utterly spurious. Is Spain really going to kick out the 400,000 Brits living on the Costa del Crime if we quit? Really? Crash the housing market even more. It is not as if those folks take any local jobs they just spend money there. That is rather different to the 27 million Bulgarians and Rumanians who come 2014 can come to the UK to work, claim benefits and use the NHS. Do we really think then Britain is a huge net importer from the EU that the Evil Empire would defy WTO agreements and try to put tariffs on British goods? It is just plain rubbish.

Boris Johnson’s idea that we can stay in the Evil Empire but opt out of CAP, fisheries and anything else we please is spurious.

Leveson: Death of a Free Press or Just An Accelerated Death of Newspapers

So the Leveson Report is out. And it is pretty grim reading. It will delight Hugh Grant, Max Mosley, Nick Clegg and the other illiberal folk who want the press muzzled. It will delight the political elite who resent their sins being revealed. And it will, I suspect, hasten the demise of the traditional newspaper industry.

Leveson proposes legislation which will see a body containing no MPs or journalists but a fine body of establishment grandees there to ensure that newspapers do not breach certain rules. If they do they will face crippling fines Ofcom will review how this body works every two years. The information Commissioner will be given greater powers to prosecute newspapers for breaches of data protection.

Hmmm. Ultimately who appoints these independent grandees…politicians. David Davies MP (the man who should have led the Tories rather than Call Me Dave) is spot on:

Guilty Confession: I watched I’m a Celebrity (again) – Nadine is winning friends

I am going away today to a place without a TV in case I get hooked but I admit that I watched I’m a Celebrity once again yesterday. And I watched the whole show. I cannot offer an excuse but I offer the observation that Nadine Dorries MP is winning friends and the posh boy Old Etonians (David Cameron and Sir George Young) who suspended her from the Tories are looking increasingly silly. What will they do if she wins?

Yesterday Nadine found herself up against the wimpish airhead actress from Coronation Street in a contest eating such horrors as a rotten egg, a piece of camel foot and a kangaroo testicle

Deluded Bulletin Board Moron of the Year – This could be a winner from the ADVFN Sefton board

Some posters on Bulletin Boards are so thick they would make the contestants on I’m a celebrity seem like a bunch of Nobel Prize winning economists. A company is obviously bust yet some buffoon manages to find reasons why its shares are cheap. Conspiracy theories abound. Amid the mind numbing stupidity you find the odd gem. Trying to pick out the BB moron of the year is an almost impossible task but here is a contender.

Obama v Romney, Man United v Chelski – I want BOTH to lose but on balance I go for ...

After 6 billion dollars and what seems like an eternity of evasion and unfulfillable promises America must decide today whether to re-elect President Obama or to replace him with Mitt Romney. What a god awful choice. It is just like Manchester United versus Chelski, you want both teams to lose. But after another evening with deluded lefties I think I have now decided who I want to lose less.

Rating the two men on a number of issues is a pretty thankless task but here goes on what matters to me.
