University of Winchester firing staff to save cash but spunking £24,000 on a Greta Thunberg statue

No I had never heard of the University of Winchester either. It is not quite up there with Oxford. In fact it is not even up there with joke marxist madrassas like Bath Spa. Two years ago its staff went on strike as Winchester announced it was cutting 10% of teaching posts because of a funding crisis. Last year it warned that it needed more voluntary redundancies as covid threatened. However…

The University’s soon to leave vice-chancellor Joy Carter earns £233,207 per annum, way more than the Prime Minister, but also finds time to be Co-Chair of the Climate Commission for UK Higher and Further Education and Chair of St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace. There have been no pay cuts for Joy while her staff get their P45s.

But just to make sure Joy leaves a legacy to be remembered, on 30 March the University will unveil a life-sized statue of Greta Thunberg, the high priestess of the global warming cult. The cost? £24,000.

Well done Joy. Quite right. In fact, why not fire another moaning lecturer and put up two statues of saint Greta? After all, the lecturers only teach kids and what’s the point of a University doing that?
