I have named a number of paedophile teachers at my old School Warwick. My writings over the years have prompted ever more victims to come forward, another poor boy sexually abused from aged nine by a Warwick teacher, contacting me last week. It was not just one teacher there was a whole nest of active paedophiles at Warwick during my time there ( 1976 to 1986) but for at least fifteen years afterwards. I bet there were nonces preying on young boys before I arrived.
Warwick has yet to reach out as it should to all Old Warwickians to acknowledge the scale of the problem and as a result many victims feel they are, perhaps, alone, they harbour wholly unwarranted feelings of shame or guilt, they bottle up secrets and it screws them up. One victim has killed himself and the timing of his death was material to what follows.
I cannot defend the way that Warwick actually ignored a compliant from the mother of one of the victims of Charles Watmough and God knows what else besides. Nor can anyone defend the way that successive headmasters brushed this abuse and the physical abuse that many of us suffered, under the carpet. But, right now, perhaps Warwick has some defence for its silence.
The man who I believe to be the most aggressive predator at Warwick in my time has already been convicted of offences elsewhere. A number of his Warwick victims have given evidence to the Warwickshire Police and it is because that there is meant to be the possibility of a prosecution that I cannot name him and Warwick cannot name him.
Warwick is too cowardly to name Watmough (alive) or David Stuke and Alan Wilkins (dead) as I have done although the evidence stacks up high. I am not sure if it still awards the Stuke Memorial Prize ( for creative writing not for sticking a drunken hand down the pyjamas of a little boy).
Naming those paedophile teachers might get more victims of these men and others coming forward but no, Warwick says nothing and indeed, some ex teachers, revile me for shining a light on the old place. I know that by early 2022 the Fuzz had statements from half a dozen victims and that material had been passed onto the Crown Prosecution Service to decide whether than vile old pervert should be prosecuted. There is still no news. If the CPS does prosecute he can be named by myself, the press and even the School. If it does not, I shall name him, inviting him to sue me for libel.
Many of these boys abused four decades ago, now, like me, in later middle age, have deeply suppressed their memories in order to function in the world and being called by the police forces them to recall the past. They have then not been offered any emotional support and the cases can take many years to come to trial. If indeed they do at all. I have given a witness statement in this matter but like the actual victims the Police refuse to tell me if anything will ever happen. Victims are just being left in limbo.
The CPS and the Police are failing the victims of a proven serial predator. It is no defence to say that the nonce is now quite old ( in his seventies). Warwick used the same excuse with the man who twice slammed my head against a wall when I was ten, Geoffrey Eve. It procrastinated until Eve was dead. I wanted him named so that, while alive, his family and friends would know what a monster the old bastard was.
