How will you fill in the census this year when it comes to national identity? If you suffer from #BrexitDerangementSyndrome like Steiner below, the answer you will provide will almost certainly be wrong.
The hint to the correct answer for Steiner is the second flag in his Twitter handle. He is as Austrian as Captain Con Trapp, the notorious rapist Josef Fritzl, Adolf Hitler and waking up in 1943 and wondering (but not too hard) where all your Jewish neighbours have disappeared to. But in the UK census, Steiner will enter as his nationality “European.” Despite the best efforts of his countryman Herr Hitler and of others at a later date to create a united Europe that will last for a thousand years, Europe is – as of today – just another continent containing many different national identities.
I fear that among Steiner’s fellow #FBPE tweeters many others will be submitting the wrong answer in this year’s census. Pray for folks like Steiner for they are ill.
